National Seminar on Contemporary Indian Women Novelists in English

Department of English
University of Hyderabad
Hyderabad

A Two-Day
National Seminar on
Contemporary Indian Women Novelists in English
25-26 March 2009

Women writers have been flourishing in the genre of fiction right from late 18th century with Toru Dutt, Krupabai Satthianadhan and Shevantibai M. Nikambe to the present novelists such as Shashi Deshpande, Manju Kapur, Jaisree Misra and Kiran Desai to mention only a few. Some of these novelists are becoming bestsellers all over the world. There has been a lot of research on the women writers either on the independent authors or on the group of authors or on the theoretical framework.

However, this seminar will try to explore all the canonized and non-canonized texts starting from 2000 onwards as the publication cut off date and authors of the contemporary women novelists and makes an attempt to bring them for a discussion and also let the literary world know about the novelists who may have been budding or otherwise.

The broad themes could be:

*Inter-link between marriage and career
*Dependence on friends, relatives, neighbours and largely on society
*Independence of women in life/Individuality in women’s life
*New challenges posed by women to the society
*Education a wide window and broad weapon for women
*Divorce and Remarriage: No longer a taboo
*Shared family responsibility of couples
*Unmarried women with no regrets
*Change in sexual attitude/notions

Call for Papers:

Papers are invited from the teachers, research scholars and post graduate students to share their views and strengthen the efforts of the seminar. It is a promise to all the paper readers that the papers presented will be brought out in the form of a book. Hence, paper readers are requested to send full-length papers and not a rough or a working paper. It is difficult to manage to put them together after the seminar.

Submission of Abstracts:

Contributors are requested to submit their detailed outlines and abstract of the paper in about 500 words to Dr. D. Murali Manohar, Department of English, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad-500 046 on or before January 31, 2009. The selected participants will be intimated by email.

Deadline for submitting the full paper:

Participants are requested to send their full paper in Times New Roman, 12 point size in MS Word to the Coordinator either by post to the following address Dr. D. Murali Manohar, Department of English, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad-500 046 (Mobile No. 9908569272 Office: 040-23133406) or by email on dmmsh@uohyd.ernet.in or dmbm_vs@yahoo.co.in before March 1, 2009.

Congratulations to Chiranjeevi

This is Dr.D.Murali Manohar, Assistant Professor, Department of English, University of Hyderabd. Let me state proudly that I am the fan of Chiru right from my school days after NTR entered into politics. Now that Chiru has entered into politics my vote will be to him and try to convince people that to vote to his party.

I would like to congratulate Dr. Chiranjeevi for launching his party entitled "Praja Rajyam" on 26th August 2008 on the day when Lord Hanuman is worshipped. Since Chiru is the devotee of Anjaneya, the blessings of his Lord will always be there. As soon as I finished my class I rushed home to watch the launch of the Party name and the flag of his party. After switching on the TV I was overwhelmed by seeing the crowd. Although the politicians give the less number than what it was on that day. One could say boldly that it was the best of any political party's gathering.

The most important factor of this gathering was of the youth and the voluntary presence of them, unlike buying the people by paying cash and food. The parties are panic after the mega star's party launch.

I heard his speech completely. The ideas and aspirations are ideal and difficult to implement but not impossible. Chiru is the best person to change the idea of politics. He is the best at extempore than with the written script. Please mind you that it was the first address and first speech before the lakhs of audience, apart from the media address earlier. On the stage, he was standing alone and speaking that itself was an asset of Chiru's speech.

Suggestions:

# avoid the sidelined leaders from the other parties
#prefer to project the clean and budding leaders of the highly educated and socially committed people to be the candidates
#take independent decisions with the support of invisible god
#do not make leaders spend money and in turn become corrupt
#Accept funds only those who give generously and with a purpose but not expecting returns
#be not afraid of losing the mala/madiga/bc votes. They no longer follow the leaders of their castes
#many of the leaders of SC,ST, BC are commercialized
#committed women and realistic should be projected as candidates
